Rating – The Sun and Her Star (5+)

I couldn’t love this book more if I tried.  Envy is a rollercoaster of emotions.  This is a story of love and loss, of hope and despair.  It is a story of survival. There are so many highs and lows, and I felt every single one of them deep inside.  For some, this book will be very controversial. I mean, it is controversial, but it is also real and raw. This story shows that sometimes, life is full of choices that seem like choosing between hard and harder…bad and worse.  Don’t get me wrong. I certainly didn’t agree with all the choices the characters made. In fact, there were times I wanted to scream, “Don’t do it! Please don’t make this mistake!” But, I could understand why these choices were made.  Why they seemed like the only choice to the characters.

Dylan Allen has a way of writing that makes you see situations from a different perspective.  It doesn’t mean you have to agree with what happens, but I don’t know how you could read her books and not at least sympathize with her characters or acknowledge that there is another side to the story.  It’s why I fell in love with her writing through Thicker Than Water.  Her characters encounter situations I have never come close to in life, but I feel like I am right there with them.  I felt Graham and Apollo’s pain and agony. At one point, I had to step back. I knew my heart was bound to break in a scene that seemed inevitable, and I didn’t want these characters to have to experience that hurt.  I loved them. I was rooting for them. However, even knowing what was bound to come, I couldn’t stay away for long. While their pain and hardships were palpable, so were their love and passion. It’s why the hard times were so hard.  The love they shared was a once in a lifetime kind of love. The kind that grabs ahold and refuses to let go.

These characters were so incredibly well written.  They both had so much to overcome, but at their core, they remained the kids that couldn’t get enough of each other.  The kids who saved each other. The kids who gave their hearts away without even realizing it. Watching their story unfold from such a young age drew me in, and captivated me.  I was hooked from the very beginning. Once I started reading, I didn’t want to stop. Graham tried so hard to do the right thing. To be the man Apollo deserved, but life rarely seemed to be on his side.  Apollo loved with all she had. Her passion for her star knew no end. Her love was truly as captivating as the sun. And when they were together? Their passion was off the charts! Dylan Allen is a master of the slow burn.  I was on the edge of my seat waiting for their first kiss, their first touch, their first everything. And when it came…wow. The build was delicious, and so worth the wait.

This book isn’t always easy.  It isn’t a light and fluffy beach read.  It is, however, perfect. It is raw and full of passion.  It shows that love will in fact, conquer all. The only thing I am left wanting is more.  I could read about these two forever. I am hoping that maybe Dylan will continue with this group of friends and we could have a few more glimpses in the future.
