Interview With Mae Wood

I fell hard for Mae Wood and her writing when I read Genealogy last year. I absolutely loved the book and the story behind it! Then, I listened to This Time Is Different on audio and absolutely loved it as well! To top it off, I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Mae when she signed at Indies Invade Philly. True story, I had so much fun meeting her that I forgot to have her sign my book! She is fun, funny, and so incredibly welcoming! To say interviewing her was an honor would be an understatement! Keep scrolling to find out all about her and her new book, Crush!

Can you tell us a little bit about your new release, Crush?

lnsta-lust in California’s wine country, but the love, like a good wine, develops over time.

It’s the story of Kenzie, who’s family owns a winery, and Ryan, who is a banker helping the winery expand.  She’s a free spirit. He’s more serious, but when they meet… y’all… It’s a hot book, okay.

Do you have a favorite scene?

I loved writing Chapter 6 of Crush.  They’re each crushing on the other and she takes him on a tour of the vineyard and it’s a very visceral yet dreamy sequence. The world just falls away and they give into feeling.

You have such a wide variety of books.  Where do you find inspiration for your stories?

I wish I knew! I spent a lot of time thinking about imaginary people while I go for long walks around my neighborhood.  And, over time, those people become real to me and eventually I know them well enough to write their stories. I read a lot of non-fiction and newsy-type stuff, as well.  All of that feeds into my creative process in very important ways that I don’t truly understand. Research is a huge part of my process.

I love that you’ve recently joined the audio world!  Do you have plans to continue to add your backlist to audio?

Yes!  I have three of my six books in audio.  If all goes well, then I may be making Plus One into audio sometime this summer. We shall see!  If you have casting ideas, let me know!

You have a full time job in addition to being an author, correct?

I do work! I have a pretty intense day job and two small children. Writing is how I unwind from the stress. Romancelandia is truly my happy place. Writing brings me joy and readers bring me joy.  My husband marvels at how I light up when I’m talking about books and book people.

How do you make time for both?

My life is pretty focused on my job, my kids, and writing and reading. It’s all about priorities, so I rarely watch TV.

Do you have any future plans to write full time?

As soon as I can figure out a way to write romances full time, I’m doing it!  Until then, I love my day job. And I love being able to write what I want to write with the goal being to break even and bring smiles to readers’ faces.  Working gives me the luxury of choice in what I write, although being able to write one book a year is a bit of a bummer — for y’all and for me!

Which book has been the most fun to write?

I’m a total nerd. I love to learn about the world and about people. Because I’m a nerd, Genealogy was awesomely fun to write. I got to learn so much about 1900s America, the Philippines, and cochlear implants!

What are your top 5 favorite books to read?

I’m no-so-secretly a sucker for steamy historical romances. Dukes, earls, the whole big dress shebang.  I’m waiting on Joanna Shupe’s newest. But anything by Tessa Dare, Sarah MacLean, Julia Quinn, and Joanna Shupe are at the top of my to-read pile.  And, no, before you ask, I can’t imagine ever writing one.

What do you have in store for us next?

Hopefully summer 2020 will bring you Fischer & Javi’s story. Fischer is Bert’s youngest sister from Plus One.  She’s searching for what’s next in her life — where to live, career change, the whole nine yards. Javi knows what’s next — and that’s helping take care of his brother who has disabilities as their mom ages.  It’s a story about not letting people’s perceptions about who you should be decide who you are. It’s a story about learning to live intentionally, on your own terms, and living your life filled with love. It’s 100% a steamy romance, but it’s also about Javi and Fischer finding their true selves and happiness.
